No other country spends what we do per capita for medical care. The care available is among the best technically, even if used too lavishly and thus dangerously, but none of the countries that stand above us in health status have such a high proportion of medically disenfranchised persons. Given the evidence that medical care is not that valuable and access to care not that bad, it seems most unlikely that our bad showing is caused by the significant proportion who are poorly served. Other hypotheses have greater explanatory power: excessive poverty, both actual and relative, and excessive affluence.Excessive poverty is probably more prevalent in the U.S. than in any of the countries that have a better infant mortality rate and female life expectancy at birth. This is probably true also for all but four or five of the countries with a longer male life expectancy. In the notably poor countries that exceed us in male survival, difficult living conditions are a more accepted way of life and in several of them, a good basic diet, basic medical care and basic education, and lifelong employment opportunities are an everyday fact of life. In the U.S. a national unemployment level of 10 percent may be 40 percent in the ghetto while less than 4 percent elsewhere. The countries that have surpassed us in health do not have such severe or entrenched problems. Nor are such a high proportion of their people involved in them.Excessive affluence is not so obvious a cause of ill health, but, at least until recently, few other nations could afford such unhealthful ways of living. Excessive intake of animal protein and fats, dangerous intake of alcohol and use of tobacco and drugs (prescribed and proscribed), and dangerous recreational sports and driving habits are all possible only because of affluence. Our heritage, desires, opportunities, and our machismo, combined with the relatively low cost of bad foods and speedy vehicles, make us particularly vulnerable to our affluence. And those who are not affluent try harder. Our unacceptable health status, then, will not be improved appreciably by expanded medical resources not by their redistribution so much as by a general attempt to improve the quality of life for all.1.All of the following are mentioned in the passage as factors affecting the health of the population EXCEPT ( ).2.The author is primarily concerned with ( ).3.The author refers to the excessive intake by Americans of alcohol and tobacco and drug use in order to( ).

Space shuttle Endeavor pulled up to the international space station and docked Wednesday, kicking off almost two weeks of demanding construction work. Before the late-night linkup. Endeavor’s commander, Dominic Gorie, (1)the shuttle through a 360-degree backflip to allow for full photographic surveillance. It’s one of the many safety-related (2) put in place following the Columbia tragedy in 2003.The space (3 ) crew used cameras with high-powered zoom leases to photograph Endeavor (4) nose to tail, especially all the thermal tiles on (5)belly. The pictures—as many as 300一will be scrutinized by (6) on the ground to see whether the shuttle suffered any damage (7) Tuesday’s launch.Something, maybe a bird, may have struck Endeavor’s nose (8) or ten seconds after liftoff. The launch images are inconclusive so (9) • NASA expects that images collected during the astronauts’ laser inspection of the nose and wings will reveal any damage, if it’s there.LeRoy Cain, chairman of the mission (10) team, said the launch video suggests to some that Endeavor’s nose took a hit. Still photos, on the other hand, show no impact.“It’s too early to speculate.” Cain said late Wednesday afternoon. “The (11) has got a lot of work to do on that as well as other debris items.”Also, right at liftoff, something (12) to fall off the tail end of the shuttle, possibly part of a thermal tile. Later, at the 83-second mark, a piece of debris, (13) fuel-tank foam insulation, appeared to miss the shuttle’s right wing.“There’s nothing that stands out in terms of things that we’re worried about.” Cain said. The photographs preceding the docking will (14) to NASA’s arsenal of data for determining whether Endeavor will be able to re-enter safely at the end of its 16-day (15), the longest space station mission ever by a shuttle. All the analysis will take several days.Bell chimes heralded Endeavor’s arrival just (16) midnight. “Endeavor arriving,” space station commander Peggy Whitson called out as she rang the vessel’s bell.“Peggy, that’s the sweetest bell I’ve ever heard. Thank you very much.” Gorie replied. Mission Control praised Gorie for his expert (17) . Besides seven astronauts, one of (18)Japanese, Endeavor holds the first piece of Japan’s new space station lab, Kibo, which is Japanese (19) “hope.” The storage compartment will be attached to the orbiting complex on Friday; it’s temporary location until the lab arrives in May.Endeavor also is (20)a two-armed Canadian robot, named Dextre that will be assembled during the first three spacewalks of the mission, as well as a new space station resident. Garrett Reisman. In all, five spacewalks are planned. a new space station resident.
